Several years ago, when I was Archbishop for the Military Archdiocese, I experienced an unexpected, but very memorable, encounter during a long midnight layover in Anchorage on a pastoral visit to our bases in the Far East.

It was a week that most of us will long remember and gratefully recall!
In a message videotaped before his arrival, Pope Benedict XVI clearly stated the theme he would develop in keeping with “three simple but essential words: ‘Christ Our Hope.’ ” He said he wished to “proclaim this great truth: Jesus Christ is hope for men and women of every language, race, culture and social condition.”

A couple of weeks ago I was pleased to join in honoring Judge Frank E. The following is the homily Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien gave at the Chrism Mass March 17 at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen, Homeland.
The celebration of the Mass of Chrism marks a privileged moment for the People of God throughout the Church Universal this week and what a privileged moment this is for me to stand in your midst, the People of God of Baltimore.

The last several years, as each very special Chrism Mass approaches, I have found food for the soul in a 2002 Chrism Mass homily offered by Baltimore’s proud native son Bishop Victor Galeone of St. Augustine. I thought I should share it with you and am grateful to my good friend, the Bishop of St. Augustine, for permission to do so:

In our society, there is a great emphasis placed on value. Homes, cars, jewelry – even a college education has a value or worth assigned to it. The process of determining the value of something is often predicated on what an individual is willing to pay for it. What that individual pays is referred to as the “fair market value” and is the basis of the valuation system used to set prices for nearly every commodity.
