The cover photo on the 2-23 issue (Reason to Boast) was the best in this large and competitive group. I really liked the format of large, dominant photo and issue on the front. The story teasers on the side are big and simple to read. Great use of space; thanks for not making it too crowded.

Nice usable design with a good variety of columns across the three entries. Liked the shorter editorials, especially the one on St. Joseph – an interesting take on an international story. Always good to have letters; it’s too bad there isn’t room for more. Overall they’re doing a nice job -give them more space so they can do even better!

August 24, “Divine Physician” by George P. Matysek Jr.
George Matysek Jr. provides an intriguing story about the Jesus statue at Johns Hopkins Hospital and its spiritual impact on caregivers and patients. The history of how the statue came to be placed in the hospital is well told.

September 28, “A Great Blessing” by George P. Matysek, Jr.
Writing about a developmentally disabled student can be stereotypical, but this boy’s story and personality shone through, particularly where Matysek used narrative to show how the teen interacts with fellow students. Matysek highlighted the student’s success, but didn’t shy away from uncomfortable questions. (I would have liked to have heard from the boy’s parents, though. I wondered whether they wanted to be interviewed?)

May 18, “Where Cleanliness is Next to Godliness” by George P. Matysek, Jr.
A simple subject and theme, but a well-crafted story. It’s one of the best examples of writing in this category. Good turns of phrase. The writer placed me in the scene by including details such as “. . . Miraculous Medal swung delicately from her neck in rhythm with the determined woman’s forward and backward scrubbing motion.” I could picture the scene in my mind. Also, the set-ups that led into the quotes consistently made for natural (not jarring) transitions, ie: This is a job that takes its toll. “It’s hard on the knees, and you’d be surprised about how it hurts your back.”

“Parish Plan Packet” by Amy Mickolite
A very complete “how to handbook” for parishes to promote subscriptions. It does of a very nice job of explaining why The Catholic Review is important to the parish and its members.

This double truck is smart in many ways. The use of red is striking and helps the eye navigate through the page from top through the days of the week to the line across the bottom. It is well organized. But more importantly there is some tremendous photo editing here to tie in the point of each day with the image. The crown of thorns might be a little much, but only a little. This work does a tremendous job making Holy Week relevant today through good design, editing and images.
